Baby, Mix Me a Drink
Posted on October 19, 2011
If you’ve been following my twitter posts for the past six weeks, you may have noticed some subtle references to my adventures in raising a just-turned-three year old, X. As a rule of thumb, I am not a mommy blogger* nor do I have any desire to be one, thus my tweets have been tiny cries for help or perhaps self-affirmations that I am not defeated.
Backstory: the Professor was out of town and I was on my own with a “strong-willed” child, i.e. tremendona, pepperina, hard-head toughy. In a nutshell, all I seemingly had to do was bike X to school and back Monday through Friday and entertain her in the non-scholastic, non-playdate, non-sleep hours. By my estimate, that amounted to approximately 55 hours weekly , i.e. equivalent to any generic job with overtime.
Easy as pie? The required skillset needed was the uncanny stratagem of a world class chess player, hyper awareness of table tennis champion and the physical strength of a construction worker. X kicked my ass and by the end of our Mommy & Me month, I was talking to walls when I wasn’t reading to her, Bella and myself Lisa Brown’s Baby Mix Me A Drink.
X, consider yourself lucky. Serendipitously, I stumbled on a den of women-led parents (duh, moms) who have initiated a weekly aperitivi hour where children constructively play while parents can enjoy an aperitivo and a social life: Apemamma, happy hour for yummy mummy and child.
Thursdays, starting, October 20, Chiostro del Bramante from 5 to 8 pm. BYOC-bring your own child. All parents and people welcome. Arco della Pace, 5 (Navona)
**Don’t worry, my next post will not be “How Mommy Got Her Groove Back”
